6.15am
Today is the biggest single day of strikes for more than a decade with schools closed, rail services halted, universities stopped and state departments disrupted.
Around half a million workers are striking on Wednesday 1 February, the TUC union federation’s day of action to defend the right to strike. Around 100,000 PCS union civil service workers, 70,000 UCU union university workers, 300,000 NEU union teachers, 15,000 Aslef union train drivers and others are taking part.
It will be a taste of working class power—but we have to make sure it’s the launchpad for a much bigger wave of strikes and resistance.
Go here for a list of rallies and protests today.
We’ll be posting reports, pictures and videos from picket lines, rallies and protests throughout the day.
