Doreen on the Scarborough Pride march this year

Our comrade Doreen Jaques died last week. She was proof that when it comes to being a revolutionary, you’re only as old as you feel. Doreen, a retired nurse, discovered politics in her 70s after attending a public meeting against fracking.

The idea of drilling was so horrific that she felt she had to try to stop it. She soon became a member of Frack Free Scarborough, joining in with everything from leafletting to protest marches and frack-site blockades across the country.

After witnessing the police’s brutal treatment of protesters, and engaging in discussions about racism, exploitation and the state, Doreen was soon marching against fascists and supporting strikes.

She began attending Socialist Worker Party (SWP) meetings and we joked that we’d would recruit her eventually—until one day when she said yes. Doreen had to slow down her activism of late, though she made the protest against the fascist Yorkshire Patriots this summer, and Scarborough Pride in late September.

York and Scarborough SWP send our sympathies to Doreen’s daughter Andrea, and her son Ian.
